It’s official, the feeling, that is…that I am an official resident of the City of Toronto, Hogtown, The Big Smoke. After a weekend of fun in the city I have come to feel a real connection with my new hometown. (Although I will always call Oshawa my hometown, you can take the girl out of the ‘Shwa, but you can’t take the ‘Shwa out of the girl.)
Friday my friend Carolyn and I went to see Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues at the New Yorker theatre near Yonge and Bloor Sts. We took the streetcar from the end of my street up to Yonge St., where the Eaton Centre is. Then we walked north up Yonge until we found the theatre. It was further north than I thought, not really part of the theatre district, and sort of out of the way, but we enjoyed looking in shop windows at shoes and clothes, etc. Ate dinner (during which I was crushed by the news from Carolyn that the person I’ve been pining away for had been seeing someone for a few months off and on…don’t know if it’s still going on or not) and went over to the show. While waiting in line for the washroom, this guy came up to us and said, “You two can use the other washroom…it’s co-ed and there’s like nobody in there.” We thanked him and I had my first public co-ed washroom experience. No, it was nothing like the set of Ally McBeal. The performance was very funny and moving in parts. It was especially interesting to be encouraged to shout out the word, “cunt” at the top of your voice, and even more entertaining to hear Carolyn so enthusiastically belt it out! After the show we walked to Queen and John, to the Starbucks that’s there across from the CHUM City building, where MuchMusic (Canadian MTV) is located. They were setting up for the MuchMusic video awards, so there was a lot going on there. Then I took the streetcar back home. It was wonderful after spending an evening downtown not to have to drive my tired ass all the way back to Oshawa, too.
Saturday I loafed around the house because the weather was crap, off and on, thunderstorms and rain, but it cleared up and I went to my friends’ apartment, again on the streetcar, and we had a couple of Strongbows and chatted before S headed out to a party with her work friends, and M and I went over to the College and Euclid area for “A Taste of Little Italy.” Since the weather was sort of crummy still it wasn’t terribly busy, but the street was blocked off to traffic, and we chose a little restaurant called Bella Vista Trattoria to eat in. After a long dinner we went to Starbucks (yes, again…) and then home.
Yesterday my dad, his wife Heather, and my brother Matt visited my apartment for the first time and really liked it. I made a big brunch breakfast for us, my first real entertaining in the new place. We walked up to Queen St. and I showed them a little of the neighbourhood. A very nice time. They left, I read, had a nap, then did some overtime in my kitchen.
Now Monday has arrived, I’m tired, the coffee hasn’t kicked in yet, and I just can’t wait until Friday, when my friends are coming over after work for a housewarming drinking party.
