Bad Timing

This question is for Brian and Leah: Did either of you “meet someone” and then have to skip off to a ship contract? This question is for everyone else: Ever get skipped out on by someone joining a crew? It has been proven to me without a doubt this week that I have the absolute worse timing when it comes to hooking up with people. Okay, I didn’t actually get as far as the “hookup” but it was on the way, honest it was…

M and S wanted to introduce me to a single friend of theirs whom they play hockey with on a co-ed team. So last Monday night we arranged that I would go and watch them all play hockey, then they would casually invite the friend, saxman, over for a couple of drinks afterward. After the game I waited in the lobby of the arena for everyone to finish. M came out first, then saxman. What a wonderful first impression this person made! He is fairly tall, dark blond hair greying a little (that’s okay), in pretty nice shape. But the thing about him was that he was immediately friendly, and looked right into my eyes. Great laugh lines. I love that. Anyway, then S came out of the changeroom, which is also co-ed and we went over to their apartment which is about three blocks away. S had stocked the fridge full of Strongbow and made some bruschetta and other munchie stuff, and we sat around and listened to some music and talked. saxman is a musician (Why do I keep getting mixed up with them? I think it’s my “thing.”), a saxophone player, mostly jazz. He performs in some clubs around the city, but mostly he teaches kids how to play the clarinet and flute. He does the odd wedding or private event, too. So we were all chatting and it turns out he’s done a ship contract with Celebrity, playing the saxaphone onboard. We talked about ship life and told M and S what it’s like to live and work on a ship. Compared how it was at Disney with what it’s like to work for Celebrity. He’s got a great sense of humour, and tells a great story. Does accents bang-on. The evening was a lot of fun, and I knew I would like to meet up with him again soon.

S works with saxman at the Art Gallery of Ontario, so she found out when his next public appearance was going to be. This is the Lee’s Palace thing I talked about in the previous entry, “Catchup.” I got some major eye contact from saxman that night at Sax on Yonge, too. I was encouraged.

S made sure to invite him to her gallery opening tonight, and when she called him about it he told her that he’d accepted a two month contract with Celebrity again. The Vancouver/Alaska route. I am so disappointed, I’ve really become interested in this guy, and had intended to ask him out at the gallery tonight. Instead I’ll be getting his e-mail address, attempting to remain composed and not make an ass out of myself then spend the next two months hoping he doesn’t come back to Toronto attached to anyone. SIGH It seemed so great to meet someone I was genuinely intellectually and physically attracted to that would get the ship thing. Accept it. Embrace it. Has this ship sailed? (Sorry, couldn’t resist.) I hope not.

I’ll let you all know how I survive the opening tomorrow.
