I really like my job at the Air Canada Centre. Yesterday when I went to work I sat filling out my paperwork for my Pizza Pizza stand in a seat in the bowl (the “bowl” refers to the seats that encircle the arena on the 100 level) while Shania Twain’s band practiced. They played “Forever and for Always” while I sat and sang along, filling out my stand sheets, etc. I thought, “How great is this? I come to work and get to sit in with Shania Twain in practice concert.” Thursday when they were practicing they sang a tune and at the end of it she said, “That was a train wreck…” and went on to rework the song. I think I’m pretty lucky and I hope that the novelty of working in that building never completely wears off. I will be going in on Monday at noon to start to working with Carmella, who does scheduling and payroll for all of Food & Beverage, including Quick Service (Concessions), Catering, and Vending. I’ll be doing mostly data entry in the beginning, and then turn into a more administrative support role. I wasn’t given a timeframe for how long this could go on, but I hope that someone will take notice of my skills and that someday it might lead to a full-time position within the company. Just being there will be beneficial because when another supervisor calls in sick or cancels a floor shift, I’m already there in the building to pick it up if I want. I’ll be making more than I was making at the publishing company. Of course, there I was being paid benefits, but in this job I get to run around a little and be in a really cool building working for the same company that employs the Toronto Maple Leafs and Raptors. Maybe I have overlooked the fact that working in Food & Beverage/hospitality is my “calling”. On Thursday night this woman bought four bottles of pop and some slices of pizza and popcorn and she just had her little daughter with her. We have to remove the lids on the bottles, so there was no way she would have been able to carry it all without spilling. I offered to help her carry her purchases to her seat, and she seemed very grateful. Then two women asked me to take their picture, which I did. They were so happy to have that photo. I felt so good doing these things for these complete strangers. I chatted with the little girl, who was so excited to see Shania. I knew I was making their experience there at the concert sort of special and fun and that made me feel really great. I have always liked doing things for people. If I can do something like that for someone every time I go to work then I’ll be helping to make a lot of fans’ nights fun. I think there is some merit in that.
