Goodbye MLG

Today I got to go on a tour of Maple Leaf Gardens. The building has been sold to Loblaw’s and the sale will be final sometime in the next few weeks. As an employee at MLSEL, I was fortunate enough to be able to visit the building for a look around today. I had never been inside before, but there is such an overwhelming sense of history there. Some of the people I went with had worked there years before. There was even evidence of my one friend’s sales from back in the day when he was a vendor. Now he runs vending at the Air Canada Centre. We found some cool souvenirs to take home. I grabbed an auction catalogue from when the building officially closed, a menu from the Hot Stove Club and an old Leafs schedule from the 1998-99 season, the last year the team played at MLG. A couple of guys found Home and Visitor signs from a scoreboard that had been left behind. Lots of fun. On one hand the franchise has come a long way, but there is still a lot of work to be done at the ACC when it comes to building its own tradition and history.
