Friends and Neighbours

Yesterday I went to a baby shower for my friend Andrée, who had her first baby on March 31. Cole Cameron Davis was born at 9:28 pm. Andrée and I became friends in grade 8 when we both went to Durham Art Camp. Then in grade 10 we were both editors of our high school’s yearbook. Not-so-coincidentally, we both ended up working in the publishing industry (she’s a project manager at McGraw-Hill Ryerson, and I’m an editor at another publishing company). She got married a few years ago and lives happily here in Oshawa with her husband, Paul. Her little baby is very cute. He slept almost the whole time we were there. Everyone got a turn to hold him. Andrée seemed to be very content and relaxed. Motherhood suits her.

I saw a few people from high school I hadn’t seen since then. My friend Sara was there, and we got chatting and it turns out she lives around the corner from here. It was really great to talk to her. I think it’s a true sign of friendship when you can go 10 years without seeing someone and just fall back into your old conversations without any awkwardness. I hope to see her again, especially since we’re practically neighbours. The world really does get smaller as you get older!
