Oscar Flicks

I don’t usually care about Oscar-nominated movies and this year is no exception. I have, however, actually seen a few in question this time around. (Nominations to be found here.)

Brokeback Mountain. Excellent story, I don’t see what the big deal is. If you’re a straight guy who watches this movie, it won’t make you gay. As one of my colleagues recently said, any episode of Six Feet Under is gayer than this movie. Plus, it was filmed in Alberta. Michelle Williams, formerly “Jen” of “Dawson’s Creek”, looked absolutely forlorn throughout. Kudos to her for her real acting here.

Capote. Really liked the movie, even if I did find Philip Seymour Hoffman’s voice distracting throughout a lot of the film. I read “In Cold Blood” and have developed an interest recently in true crime stories, so this made it especially good. It was a little slow in a few parts, but this didn’t bring down the value of the movie. I also liked the side-plot about Harper Lee and “To Kill a Mockingbird” and how Truman Capote was so wrapped up in his own stuff he didn’t even really notice her success.

Memoirs of a Geisha. Read this awhile ago and thought the book was amazing. It was one I couldn’t put down. I was excited to see it had been made into a film. Apparently there is some controversy in Japan because the actors were Chinese, not Japanese. I think it’ll win for art direction or something like that.

Walk the Line. Fun movie. Reese Witherspoon was adorable and Joaquin Phoenix did a great job playing Johnny Cash. They even did their own singing which I thought was pretty cool. Much better than lip syncing, anyway.

I’d still like to see King Kong and the newest Harry Potter flick, but I probably won’t see them before March 5 (the date of the big Oscars show).

Also, Jon Stewart is going to host which will make the event worth watching. Maybe I’ll camp out in front of the tv with a big bowl of popcorn and see what all the fuss is about.
