Today we had my car towed away to the wrecker’s for a measly $50. That’s what happens after you drive the same car for 10 years and it suddenly breaks down on the 401. It did that way back on Mother’s Day, and ever since then, my 1995 Hyundai Accent has been sitting sadly in our driveway, slowly succumbing to rust.

I was a little sad, because I got that car the spring before I went to university, when I was 19 years old. It ran really great and was very reliable. You could fit so much stuff in it, too. It was great for moving between apartments when I went to university and for helping other people move stuff. I drove it back and forth between Oshawa and London a countless number of times. I drove it to Ottawa to visit friends, to cottages, to visit my Mom when she lived an hour away, used it as a commuter vehicle…the only maintenance that was required, other than oil & filter changes, and regular brake work was a replacement alternator and some new tires. That car really represented my independence. It took me awhile to get used to the fact that I might not ever have another vehicle that is just “mine”. It’s not that I’m unable to share, it’s just that, well…I bought that car with my own money over six years. Call me crazy, but I got attached during the 10 years I drove it. I’ll miss that car and what it represented for me.
