A Million Jobs Ago

Yesterday I was walking in the mall in Oshawa past the Casey’s restaurant where I used to work, and I saw one of the managers I used to work with come out of the restaurant and walk toward the food court. The funny thing is, that guy used to work there when I worked there, 11 or 12 years ago! He looked a little older, a little heavier, but had the exact same way of walking, and wore the same style of clothes.

In the same amount of time I’ve had nine jobs (that I can think of). I don’t know for certain that this guy has stayed at the same restaurant, managing, the entire time since I left that position, but assuming he has, what is it that makes a person remain in one position for 12 years, while another switches it up so often? Wait, it was ten (Air Canada Centre). No, eleven (Tailgate Charlie’s). Good lord.

Okay, I just have to write out my “Master Job List”, roughly in chronological order.

1. babysitter (does that count?)

2. photographer’s assistant

3. McDonald’s crew member

4. McDonald’s crew trainer

5. Northern Getaway sales associate

6. Oshawa General Hospital, volunteer buyer for coffee kiosk

7. Casey’s server

8. The Wave server

9. The Wave bartender

10. UWO residence clerk

11. Tailgate Charlie’s server

12. Disney Cruise Line beverage server

13. OnX marketing assistant

14. Red Lobster server (briefly)

15. legislation administrator

16. content editor

17. freelance editor

18. Angelo’s greenhouse worker

19. SBR proposal writer

20. Air Canada Centre quick service supervisor

21. Air Canada Centre payroll assistant

22. acting group leader

23. General Motors Centre assistant manager, suites & catering

When I become an agent, that will be 24 jobs in 16 years. Think that’s a record?
