I’ve jumped back into knitting again. I got Debbie Stoller’s Stitch ‘n Bitch book for Christmas two Christmases ago and in the first year or so, I got fairly good at knitting and purling but not a whole lot else. Knitting is something I can only get into once gardening season winds down and hockey season starts. I can knit in front of the Leafs all winter long. This year I feel different…like I can do other, trickier stitches, and maybe even knit something real for someone to wear. No more square and rectangle projects!
I’ve got my first project from 2007 under my belt…a little hat for the cutest wee baby I know these days. (Sitting atop proofs for the big, bad, directory-style book I’m working on.)

Other projects I plan to tackle include a pair of slippers from this book and a hat for Graham from this book.
Of course there are a lot of terrific knitting blogs and websites out there, too, like Crazy Aunt Purl, the fantastic, free-pattern-laden Knitty.com and when you need someone to demonstrate a tricky technique, KnittingHelp.com has all kinds of little quick demos that will show you how to make all kinds of stitches. Craftzine linked to this post, “Sock it to me, baby!“, a tutorial for knitting socks for beginners (like me).
I also want to take this opportunity to tell you about a terrific project called “The YGG Warm Winter Wear Drive 2007“. For those of you who are unaware, YGG stands for You Grow Girl. Members of You Grow Girl knit, crochet or sew up winter wear for distribution at the Redwood Shelter for Abused Women in Toronto. I’m planning to crochet a scarf or two to contribute to the cause. Click the link above for more information about how to participate. Click here to read about the contributions made in 2006. Thank you, Gayla, for organizing this again this year.

Thanks for linking to this Amy. I should have got on it sooner. I haven’t knit anything since last year!

That’s the hat I commented on in flickr–love it! Are socks a beginner project? Or will I have to start with a scarf? Scarves. Ugh.
