Good karma.

Over the weekend I attended an event at the arena I used to work at. You know, the one that screwed me over, contract and salary-wise? The one I quit because of all the being taken advantage of? Anyway, it was nice to see some of the people I used to work with, and some of the girls I supervised. I was there because I had brought some business their way, booking the UWO Alumni Durham Branch event there. The suites were looking really nice. All of the finishing touches that I never saw put in place had been added. The televisions were mounted in the corner of each suite, and the sideboards had been installed. I started to think it wouldn’t be so bad to have to go to work there, as long as I wasn’t management. I spoke to my friend, who had been my partner in managing the suites, and she said she was looking for some people to hire as suite attendants.

I thought long and hard about it. Could I put the past behind me and take advantage of this opportunity to make a little extra money? Sure, I had been mistreated before, but I figured that I could use them in return to help Graham and I get ahead. No training required, just jump right in and start earning a little extra money.

It was not to be. My friend spoke to her boss, the same guy I had to inform, “this isn’t working for me” almost exactly a year ago. Turns out he can hold a grudge. He didn’t think it would work out. It’s really his loss, because I would do GREAT for them. I would never take my resentment out on the customer. But he isn’t big enough to see who, and what, he is turning away. And that’s fine. I was insulted and embarrassed for about five minutes, until I realized it isn’t really about me. This all happened a few days ago.

This morning, Graham and I were sitting in the local diner having some breakfast when a woman approached our table and said she knew us from somewhere. It was Barb, from Perfect Little Moments, where we were married. She and her brother ran the catering and wedding location we were married at. And guess what? They’re now opening up a new restaurant in Bowmanville, and they need to hire some people! People with hospitality experience! At the beginning of January! I think there’s something there for me if I want it. I forwarded her my resume and availability for the evenings, with the hope she’ll agree to hire me on a part-time basis so we can continue to work toward getting out of D-E-B-T.

Graham just shook his head, smiling at me.

“It’s funny how things go in life, isnt’ it? You were turned down for work two days ago and here a job practically falls into your lap.”

I think I have good job karma. It just goes to show that what you put out into the universe will sometimes come back to you!

That is pretty good karma. Well done!

And debt. Shudder. Here’s to ridding our lives of that monster, huh?
