Who knew peek-a-boo could be this fun?

Yesterday I spent the afternoon with a new friend and her sweet little two-year-old daughter as we practiced being mall rats at the Oshawa Centre. The Oshawa Centre is the mall I strolled as an awkward adolescent, trying desperately to be as cool as a classmate of mine who thought she was very grown up as she announced to us lemmings that her RAG was, like, totally up her ASS.

The mall has changed a lot, and now houses nearly all high-end clothing and shoe stores, which is great if you have a lot of disposable income, which, as you all know due to my ramblings about banks and mortgages, etcetera, I do not. I was just happy to get out of the house for a few hours, had been happily anticipating this get-together, and leapt at the chance to burn a $25 gift certificate that I received for Christmas, which I easily did in Chapters.

My point is, however, that yesterday was a really great way for me to get a sneak preview into the life of a mom. I got a big kick out of watching my friend’s daughter “Whooo!” with enthusiasm upon discovering a little girl-sized, red and black soccer ball in Old Navy, and had fun kicking the little ball back in forth with her, while she repeatedly told me, “I GET IT!”

I enjoyed watching her climb in and out of the rides in the middle of the mall while I gabbed with her mom on the mall bench, faux palms and tropical mall plants surrounding us.

I was interested to see how well she played with other kids at Chapters in the children’s section, even if the effort required to remove her from this play area was considerable, and involved the promise of green caterpillar cookies at Starbucks.

I’ve written before about how much I enjoy spending time with my friends’ kids, and yesterday was no exception. In fact, if anything, it gave me the chance to live somewhat vicariously through the life of one mommy, to start to feel the beginnings of what will be an exciting adventure (because everything we did yesterday was an exciting adventure in the eyes of this two-year-old).

To feel that, yes, I COULD DO THIS.

(P.S. A friend of mine needs the advice of working moms. If you have any for her, drop her a comment. I’ll send you a caterpillar cookie.)

(P.P.S. Mimi on the Breach and I are on the prowl for a pair of lovely ladies to room with us in San Francisco. Hint, hint.)

That rag comment took me right back to high school! I haven’t heard that in ages. Thankfully we’ve all outgrown that phase.
