To our server at the Village Inn pub in Bowmanville, Ontario,
A couple of days ago I went with a friend to your restaurant for a bite to eat. At the end of our meal we paid our separate cheques in cash to you at the table. When we told you that we didn’t need change, you said that you were glad you wouldn’t have to go and make any change for us. My friend’s payment included some coin, including three pennies. You accepted payment from my friend, but pushed the pennies back at her, telling her that you didn’t ever keep pennies, that they “messed up your float” and that you didn’t want them.
My friend and I both work in a restaurant in Bowmanville and we were absolutely mortified by this. It is quite honestly the rudest gesture I have ever encountered in the hospitality industry over fifteen years working within it. Neither of us would ever dream of telling one of our customers that we didn’t want their money or that it was “a pain” to have to deal with their cash, no matter how small the amount. Your comment made me want to ask for my change, and to walk out with all of it, instead.
As fellow servers we should be looking out for one another, not insulting each other.
I usually really enjoy going to the Village Inn, and I will return, although I hope a different server will take care of us next time.
Sincerely,
Amy.

Pennies are so too money! Until they’re outlawed or go out of style or go the way of Susan B. Anthony dollars (that’s an American reference), I am all about the penny. I pick them up off the ground. My friend, Owen, though, is on your server’s team. He hates them. He hates them as much as he hates Roger Federer. I know! How can you hate either? I’ve got to rethink this friendship…

That’s very weird. However, I’ve noticed that QuikTrip doesn’t mess with pennies anymore. I’m sure they’ll *take* them, but they round your change up so they don’t have to give them out.

Well, that’s just rude and dumb. Even pennies add up! I wonder how long they will be a server? Hmm…guessing not long.

I think your pennies are worth more than ours are these days. We have one in our register at work and I like it there. I won’t give it out as change. I keep giving out the ones that are worth less to the customers!! LOL!! Sorry, this was supposed to be funny but I just realized it is a bit sad….. For us anyway!! The thing I love about pennies is, they add up!!
Have a great weekend!!
Hugs!!

Wow, that is SO rude, making your money (and your restaurant experience) into being about HIM.
Reminds me of a particular server at one of our old faves in Edmonton (Chianti’s -most of the servers are fabulous but I think this guy is the owners son or something so, apparently, manners don’t matter). I can’t remember exactly how the cash/change worked out but I needed change for the tip and the way he returned it implied that he expected $10. I tip generously (to J’s chagrin) but this guy’s service was very poor AND to have to gall to suggest how I should spend MY money?! It infuriated me, so we dug out our pockets and left $2 in coins.

Um. Yeah. Personally, I’d tell the management on the QT, but then again, maybe the tips she earns reflects the quality of her service already.

I think he was absolutely rude and totally out of line. Probably a guy who is just whiling away at the job and is not really concerned if he loses it as he has something else up his sleeve. But they ruin it for the rest of them. The ones who take such good care of their customers.
