Four years ago today Graham and I had our first real date.
We had been chatting online and sending e-mail back and forth for about a month before we met up in person, after having met on the popular dating site, Lavalife.
For our first date we met up at Starbuck’s in Oshawa. I was still living in Toronto, you see, while Graham was living here in Bowmanville and November the third is my step-brother’s birthday, so I was going to be in town that day to help celebrate. Later on, weeks after our date Graham told me that he had been sitting in his car in the parking lot, talking on his cell phone with a friend when I arrived for our date. “I think I see her,” he had told his friend on the phone. “I hope that’s her!” It was me. I ordered a tall hazelnut latte and sat to wait for his smiling face to come around the corner.
Because our date fell right after the American election in 2004, we chatted a bit about politics, about Graham’s house, which he’d lived in for two months at the time, and which later became our marital home. Who knew we’d click so well, and that we’d spend almost every available waking minute together from that point onward?
At the end of our date there was no kiss, but there was a terrific hug in the parking lot of the Starbuck’s, and I remember that Graham was wearing his leather jacket because it was cool on my cheek during that warm and promising hug.

Awwww! Happy Meeting Day!
I met Josh in a similar way, although it was Internet, then mall food court. Oh, the sophistication of 13 years olds! His Sbarro pizza and my Arby’s melt with cheddar were definitely the stuff of fairy tales. LOL.
