Revealing your inner nerd.

Apparently this Twilight series of vampire books has mommybloggers across North America swooning with, as Her Bad Mother so eloquently put it, “freaktastic goth cougar”-ness. As I mentioned on Twitter this morning, I have not yet read the Twilight books.  I have this rule about reading the book before seeing the movie, and as much as I enjoy a good vampire tale, I just didn’t have it in me to purchase the books.  I’ve got the Sookie Stackhouse series on my Christmas wish list, however.

I stood in front of the over-the-top display in the teen section in Chapter’s just last week. I picked up a copy of the first in the Twilight series, flipped open to a random page and the phrase “biology class” jumped off the page at me. I sighed, returned the book to the shelf, and wondered if someone would loan me their copy before I drop $16.99 on a book that might suck (no vampire pun intended).

So yes, the Twilight series and subsequent movie has adult women behaving like crazed, lust-filled teens, but so far it hasn’t drawn me in (not the way True Blood has…mmm, Bill…). I’ve experienced my share of pop culture nerdliness in life, however. I’ve always enjoyed Star Trek, The Next Generation, for example, and recently exclaimed in delight over a set of miniature collector plates featuring Captain Picard and Data in a local antique shop. They’d be sort of awesome as a stocking stuffer. I’ve made no secret of my love for Star Trek Voyager, either.

All of this has me wondering, what delightfully embarrassing nerdliness are you hiding? And when do tickets for the new Star Trek movie go on sale?

(P.S. The Blogger Holiday Cookie Party is still on!)

  1. OH MY GOD.

    I LOVE YOU.

I am the biggest Trekkie nerd ever. I even have Spock ears. For realz. Because even in utero, I geeked out over Star Trek.

Public library: that’s how I read all four. Granted, I had to wait as I was request 397 of 397, but I’m a cheapskate who doesn’t buy books. (That and I’m slightly embarrassed to admit that I read Twilight when it first came out, long before the fandemonium hit.)

The new Star Trek doesn’t come out until May 2009. Which sucks because that’s when I’m supposed to get this fetus out of my uterus (can you imagine? going into labour at a Star Trek movie premiere? That’s being born into nerdiness. Literally)

My inner nerd? Show me about 20 seconds of the beginning of any original Star Trek episode, and I’ll tell you the name.

I do not, however, own Spock ears. And am mildly jealous of Redneck Mommy.

Also, I know about 10 people who were in the “Trekkies” movie.

Um, I met Ann Rice (vampire novels) and Neil Gaiman (Sandman comic books). Does that count?

I don’t think I’m too nerdy, at least not in the Sci-fi way. Though, when I told Josh about NaBloPoMo, he said, “Next time you call me a nerd, think about this moment.” So I guess I’m internet-nerdy, but that’s no secret!

Um, do you have your Christmas tree up already?

Regarding nerdiness, I wear glasses, work as an editor, and read all the time. Guess there’s no “inner” about it!

Okay, at the risk of embarrassment and being lumped in with a fad I’m going to tell you that I love the Twilight Books. I read the first one in October of THIS year- and I’ve read all four now–TWICE. In my 48 years I have never done this. I don’t read romances, I like big, involved epics with complicated plots– I read all the Ayn Rand books for Pete’s sake. But I love these books. I’m seeing the movie tomorrow. As long as I’m confessing– I love Star Trek, Joss Whedon, Narnia, Lord of the Rings and yes, the Underworld movies. Be kind. My hormones are wacked this month so I’m a tad sensitive. BAHAHAHAHAHA

I am new to your blog…like it very much. I am a Trekkie and a Twilighter. I started reading Twilight because I didn’t have anything better to do and ended up enjoying it for what it was.

Check out WalMart they have the books there for cheap.
