The Little Ame diaries.

Between 1978 and 1979 my mom kept a little journal about me. It was a pre-printed daily journal, with space for writing just a few lines on each day. It was probably meant for keeping appointments, but she used it to write things about our days together. I was born in early 1977, so the journal represents my life when I was 21 months to about 26 months old. When she gave it to me to hold onto on March 22, 2005, she included a little note:

Amy

It saddens me that the years have flown so quickly by. However I am reminded of the fun I had with you as you turned from baby to little person as I read this book. Please don’t let anything happen to it. It’s VERY important to me. But I thought you and Graham could laugh (and be encouraged to have one of your own??). xo

It didn’t seem to matter to her that Graham and I weren’t even married yet!

I read the journal the other day and laughed my head off at some of the things I said and did as a toddler. Some of them were very telling as to the kind of person I ended up being as an adult. Here’s a little sampling.

Oct. 11/78. Amy is so-o funny, she makes me laugh my head off lately. She’s fun to be with too. As soon as “The Price is Right” starts, she says, “Come on down.”

Oct. 21/78. Her vocabulary is growing in leaps and bounds. She says “Morning Mom” and is so polite. She says “Pl-lease” and “Tank you”, “Bamma” (Gramma), “Bampa” (Grampa). She knows some animals (Doggie, Puppy, Kitty Kitty, Orsie (Horsie) etc. She says Damn It if she drops something.

Dec. 28/78. Amy knows quite a few letters: A, B, D, H, K, M, Q, R, S, T, W, Y. She can identify all of these by looking at them.

I’m glad I have this little journal as a record of me when I was Little Ame.

I have one of those diaries… I wrote in it myself. Reading what my 10 year old self thought was important is hilarious and embarrassing all at the same time.

It’s nice to have a memento from your mom. I’ve been doing the same with my boys. Keeping a diary where I write down the snapshots of their lives. Even now, I forget so much and they’re still young.

    That is SO special.

Makes me think that perhaps kids will appreciate being blogged about, just a little bit :-)
