172 happy beats per minute.

This morning I went for my second prenatal appointment.  When the nurse brought me into the examination room, before she closed the door she said, “I’ll just go grab the doppler.”  She brought in a small, grey device equipped with a speaker and its accompanying squeeze bottle of jelly.

I talked to my doctor about how I’ve been trying to balance eating the right food for the baby, and eating the right food for my gall bladder situation, and she assured me that I shouldn’t spend too much time worrying about it…the key for both is just to eat a balanced diet, and whether that includes red meat or not, is up to me and what I like to eat.  I guess I just have to make sure to get enough protein, dairy, etc., and the prenatal vitamins help out with the rest, like iron, calcium and whatnot.  She said that if I want to try some red meat just to grill it well so that most of the fat burns off of it.  So maybe one day when I’m feeling brave I’ll give some a try.

At the end of the appointment I got up on the examination table and my doctor said she’d try to listen to the baby’s heart.  She said that sometimes you can’t hear it yet if the uterus isn’t up high enough, but after a few seconds of listening, there it was: the tell-tale, reassuring swoosh-swoosh-swoosh that every mother-to-be longs to hear.  Now, I’ve never considered myself a weepy person (with the exception, perhaps, of my encounter with Grover last July), but I freely admit that my eyes welled up with tears when I heard that wonderful sound.

It’s the happiest sound I’ve ever heard.

That is the best sound ever. It is one of the things I’ll miss about being pregnant. Hopefully your hubby will get a chance to hear it one day. I remember the look on my hubby’s face when he heard it for the first time.

    Yay!

I heard this documentary on CBC that says the baby doesn’t literally eat what you’re eating–some stuff, like cocaine!, crosses into the placenta–but rather is taking its nourishment from your body generally. So if you don’t eat as well as you would feed a 2 year old, that’s okay. It’ll be mostly you that suffers, and the baby will eat from the Amy buffet instead.

That sounds weird, but it’s meant to be reassuring: eat what you can!

I am embarrassed – I have been so sick as of late, my blog-reading has fallen by the wayside. I’m so sorry I’m just now coming here to learn of your fantastic news. Congrats!

Awwww… I remember the first heart beat! It was the day I finally convinced my husband and my OBGYN that even though I had 8 WEEKS of negative pregnancy tests, I was in fact pregnant!

The doctor did the ultrasound to determine how far along I was and we heard the heartbeat.

My husband grabbed my wrist to check my pulse…that’s how sure they all were that I WASN’T pregnant.
