Learning to sleep.

Nate is learning to sleep.

At least, I’m hoping he is.

Sunday night he slept a four and a half hour stretch for the first time, ever. Before that the longest he’s slept at night has been about three hours. Sunday night he slept from midnight until 4:30. Of course I woke up around the three hour mark, wondering why I hadn’t yet heard his little grunts and squawks through the baby monitor on my bedside table. I picked it up and held it to my ear. Amid the sound of rain spattering against his bedroom window, I could hear his little sleepy breaths. I went back to sleep.

Last night I tried not to assume that he’d do a repeat sleep performance, and when he woke up at 2:45 (he’d gone down around 11), I figured that Sunday night was a fluke. I fed him, changed him and was back to bed by 3:15. The next peep I heard from him was about 7:30. I was THRILLED.

I’ve been told that I shouldn’t expect this to continue, that as soon as I get used to him sleeping more he’ll throw everything off and I’ll be screwed. But isn’t it okay to be hopeful that he’s learning to sleep longer at night? That he’s used to the sensations of digestion and able to go longer between feedings at night?

I prefer to see this glass as half full instead of expecting things to get worse. They’re getting better. When I look back over the last couple of months I see a huge improvement in Nate’s sleep. In my book, that’s great cause for at least a mini-celebration!

Ahh…the elusive sleep! My girl is getting better too. We swaddle her at night for sleep but not during the day, so she can learn the difference. It's helping – I've gotten 4 or occasionally 5 hour stretches. But it will change. Tonight she just drifted off on her own, which is good. Enjoy the changes!

Yay Nate! I hope this trend continues :)
