I’ve been watching some old episodes of Ally McBeal lately. Ally’s in therapy (naturally, because she’s a big ol’ bag of crazy) and her therapist recommends she pick a theme song.
I still love Ally McBeal but I think that my new favourite show is Parenthood. This is a show on NBC that I originally started to watch because I loved the movie and I have a not-so-secret t.v. crush on Peter Krause. I can say this here on my blog because Graham already knows and because he has a not-so-secret t.v. crush on Lauren Graham.
At the end of the show last week, a Paul Simon song played and some of the lyrics jumped out at me. I looked them up and got myself a copy of the song. It’s about a dad singing to his son, but I can still totally relate (except for the famous part, of course). I’ve decided that if I went to Ally’s therapist, I’d choose this for my theme song.
St. Judy’s Comet (Words and Music by Paul Simon)
Oo, little sleepy boy
Do you know what time it is?
Well the hour of your bedtime’s long been past
And though I know you’re fighting it
I can tell when you rub your eyes
You’re fading fast, oh fading fast
Won’t you run come see St. Judy’s Comet
Roll across the skies
And leave a spray of diamonds in its wake
I long to see St. Judy’s Comet
Sparkle in your eyes when you awake
Oh, when you wake, wake
Little boy
Won’t you lay your body down
Little boy
Won’t you close your weary eyes
Ain’t nothing flashing but the fireflies
Well I sang it once and I sang it twice
I’m going to sing it three times more
I’m going to stay ’til your resistance
Is overcome
‘Cause if I can’t sing my boy to sleep
Well it makes your famous daddy look so dumb
look so dumb
Won’t you run come see St. Judy’s Comet
Roll across the skies
And leave a spray of diamonds in its wake
I long to see St. Judy’s Comet
Sparkle in your eyes when you awake
Oh, when you wake, wake
Little boy, little boy
Won’t you lay your body down
Little boy, little boy
Won’t you close your weary eyes
Ain’t nothing flashing but the fireflies
Oo, little sleepy boy
Do you know what time it is?
Well the hour of your bedtime’s long been past
And though I know you’re fighting it
I can tell when you rub your eyes
You’re fading fast, oh fading fast
Whenever I’m trying to coax Nate into sleep I think of this song and these lyrics. It’s getting me through those late night feedings and rocking sessions.
this is so funnt. I too looked up the song after Parenthood and thought of my 5 month old son. It is a beautiful song!
It's my new favourite!
Ha! That song was on Parenthood last week and I'd never really heard it before, funny you'd post about it after hearing it on a totally different show.
