Awkward age.

Nate is five months old, and five months old is proving to be an awkward age. Nate tries so hard to be mobile. When we put him on his tummy, he reaches forward, trying desperately to get ahead. He’s a pro when it comes to rolling, both front to back and back to front and really loves moving around. He just can’t get around the way he wants to quite yet.

This makes things awkward. The toys and activities that have been keeping him busy up until now are quickly becoming useless.

He’s not crazy about the Bumbo.

He’d rather not sit in the bouncy seat, unless I’m feeding him.

He’s not wild about playing in the play pen with his toys.

Even the swing seems to have lost its lustre.

The exersaucer is still a good option. The jolly jumper is also a bit hit. But these things are to be used in moderation, from what I understand, and aren’t a great choice if he’s just eaten. Then again, tummy time is a bit tricky to fit in if he’s just eaten, too.

We were at my friend Shannon’s house yesterday and Nate seemed to enjoy playing with Shannon’s son Xander’s toys. Maybe we just need some new and different toys?

I will probably eat these words, but I will be glad when Nate can crawl. I think he’ll be happier. There will be fewer screams of frustration (his and mine). I just don’t know what to do with this kid!

He sounds just like my Nate as a baby. He always wanted to be on the move. He ended up cruising early and walking at 10 months! I wished he would have been immobile a bit longer, but in all honesty, he was a much happier and content baby once he could crawl and then walk. Just be prepared to chase him like a crazy woman!

Wow, 10 months! If we're on the same track, then Nate would be walking this fall. And hey, I guess that means I'll be getting my exercise!

  2. Gage is right there with Nate. But I've been here before, and I do not wish for him to start crawling yet. Plenty of time for that in the future…

  3. I’ve learned to never wish the crawling! LOL

With Davey we did the walker. He’s the only one out of all four that used one.

  4. I promise, it wasn’t working last night!!!
Here’s what I would have written:

Love the tote pic: amazing new alternative to babywearing!!! Never wish for the next stage. The screams of frustration never end, they just become more articulate, until before you know it, you have a 15-year-old screaming that she is not going to go rock climbing because she really WANTS to go rock climbing but for some mysterious reason came on the rock climbing outing not physically dressed for rock climbing and now – she’s bored.
Okay, deep bread. And a Yiddish expression: “little children, little problems; big children, big problems.”
