Yesterday I put Nate down on the foam mats in the living room so he could have some tummy time while I fixed his bottle. I put him down on his back, knowing that he’d flip himself over when he felt like it. Evidently, all this tummy time is paying off because he has learned to push himself backwards using his arms.

When I came back into the living room, oh, three seconds later, there he was, on the hardwood, pivoting himself around and trying to pull himself forward. I grabbed the camera, of course.

Yesterday afternoon I scanned the room…I’ve got some baby-proofing to do!

Well, technically, there are no actual words being spoken here.

This week’s new blow-your-mind baby skill is rolling over! From back to front, no less. YIKES.

Graham has been saying for a couple of weeks that he thinks Nate is trying to crawl. I’ve been skeptical until this point. I mean, they have to do things in order, don’t they? First rolling, then sitting, then crawling? This morning I think that maybe he has a point and we’re destined to be the parents of an early crawler.

I’m in trouble, aren’t I?

On Sunday afternoon I gave my mom a call. She is still living in Alberta, so I try to call her when Nate is in a playful mood so that she can hear his expanding vocabulary. For the last week or so he has been making a new noise…it sounds sort of like “coo” but with more gurgling thrown in for good measure. If he discovered that his voice can be loud last month, it seems like he’s discovered that it can be soft, too. The little “aghoooos” and “cooooos” are soft, almost like a whisper. It’s pretty cute.

While I was talking to my mom and telling her about Nate’s newest developments, he started sticking his feet up in the air before rolling onto his side. He’d teeter there, almost making it all the way over onto his tummy. I narrated what he was doing over the phone while my mom encouraged her grandson from halfway across the country.

After the fourth or fifth try I could see that Nate was making progress. He was going to do it! I held my breath.

“There he goes….HE JUST DID IT!” I told my mom.

“Good boy!” she nearly shouted. She was so excited that she was on the phone for one of his firsts.

Even though she isn’t always here in person, I was really happy that she got to experience a milestone along with us.

I put Nate down in his crib last night at about 8:30, thinking that he’d be awake again half an hour later.

Half an hour went by.

An hour.

Two hours.

Three hours later I was ready for bed and poked my head in the door.  He was beginning to stir so I fed him and he went right back down.

Until 3:30!

Didn’t hear another peep until 7:00!

I don’t want to jinx it, but if this is “sleeping through the night” for a three-month-old, I’ll take it!
